It’s a well known fact, once the mercury starts rising, we start thinking about spring cleaning! Well then, why not do the same with our bad habits?
First off, don’t be too hard on yourself. Although your gym workouts kept getting fewer and farther between this past winter, feeling guilty is pointless. Instead, take the necessary steps to change the situation. That’s why I’m writing to you today. I want to share some tips that can help with motivation so that you can whip yourself into shape and resume your healthy lifestyle habits!
Gym workouts
Our physical environment is an important determinant of health. It can be a factor in the increase or decrease in motivation levels. The fact of being surrounded by qualified personnel and having access to a wide variety of equipment betters your chances of following through and achieving your fitness goals. When joining a fitness center, get personalized advice, surround yourself with positive people, join fitness classes or supervised group training classes, etc.
It’s important to remember that one of the reasons why people give up on their workouts is that they’re not seeing results. At Nautilus Plus, you can get body composition assessments included with your membership: ideal to track the effectiveness of your fitness and nutrition programs… and stay motivated!
At-home workout
You’re more of a homebody? There is nothing that is preventing you from getting into shape in the comfort of your own home, but discipline is key. So draw up a clear-cut action plan : how many workouts per week? How long? What type of workout?
You need a little help? Here are 2 options :
- Book a meeting with a personal trainer at the gym…yup, even if you’re not a member! He will customize a fitness program according to your objectives and the kind of equipment you do or do not have at your disposal. I also strongly suggest that you book a follow-up appointment as certain adjustments to the program may be needed. You will also be more inclined to follow the plan if you’ll be returning in several weeks. It’ll be well worth the investment!
- DVD workouts. Choose a varied workout that appeals to you (one that combines cardio, muscle and flexibitity training) and make sure you have the necessary accessories (mat, weights, resistance bands, etc.). By the way, during the month of April, I suggest you follow a certain agenda, where you will be working out to one of my 30-minute DVD’s each day. It’s my Springtime challenge. You don’t have all my DVD’s? You can easily replace the missing DVD by another of the same category. Plan ahead as clear-cut plans are far more motivating. Outdoor workout
As the temperature rises, it can be very pleasant to workout in the great outdoors, to breathe in that fresh air and get a much-needed dose of vitamin D! Why not join a running club to start the season off slowly and without injury?
However, do have a Plan B: a specific workout that you can do at home or at the gym on those rainy days. This way, you won’t skip the session! For some people, Mother Nature is no obstacle, but for many of us, weather is most definitely a deterrent, so best plan ahead for those « not so sunny » days.
Let me know what your « spring into shape » plan is… I’m a little curious!
