Why is it so hard to change our eating habits?

February 2, 2021 - By Véronique Plante

Temps de lecture 3 minutes

“I’ll start on Monday! After this bag of chips, I promise that I won’t buy any more! I am not able to control myself when eating pasta, maybe the ketogenic diet would be better for me? I am addicted to sugar, I need to stop eating it! I seem to be motivated to cook vegetables, but for how long? ” So why is it so hard to change our eating habits?

Getting out of your comfort zone

If you recognize yourself in one or more of these quotes, you are not alone! On the one hand, wanting to make changes to your diet means stepping out of your comfort zone, which is something that humans don’t like. In addition, if this change involves altering your pleasure of food, it is normal that your motivation is affected and therefore, you will potentially postpone its implementation.

Be healthy through the most effective way

On the other hand, healthy eating is recognized as an essential element in the prevention and treatment of several chronic diseases (type II diabetes, heart disease, cancer, etc.). While everyone believes in the virtue of health, one cannot ignore people’s frantic search for THE “ideal food diet”. To good or bad foods, diets of the day and the arrival of Canada’s new food guide, you can add food advice from family, friends, colleagues and even some health professionals. How does one make any sense of it?

Get professional help to get there

Just as pharmacists are the only drug experts, nutritionists are the only recognized experts in food and nutrition. Having nutritional knowledge is one thing. Applying it becomes a challenge, and maintaining it requires great conviction as well as a high level of confidence and motivation.

The nutritionist is committed to guide you in adopting realistic, sustainable and scientifically validated eating habits, while considering your everyday reality as well as your physical and mental health. She is available to support you in all the stages of change, even during relapse periods which are part of the process. She is also the only professional trained to help you find solutions to your dietary obstacles – in a non-judgemental approach – and thus increase your chances of staying motivated in your change management process.

So, are you thinking about starting the ketogenic diet or intermittent fasting? How about avoiding bread, pasta and potatoes to control your diabetes? Do you have doubts about the credibility of the most recent food guide? Are you taking protein supplements because you have increased your training intensity? Do you find eating vegetables a chore?

Find simple and practical answers to your questions by consulting a nutritionist, either online or through our new webinar series format! I invite you to discover my new 100% online webinar series “Navigating Through the Nutritional Jungle” which starts on February 9, 2021. Click here for more details.
