Detox juices: Myth or magic cure?

January 6, 2025 - By Jasmine Xu

Temps de lecture 3 minutes

“I’ve lost 10 pounds since I started these detox juices! I feel much better, less bloated and I have more energy! My skin is softer! I sleep better! Try it, your body will thank you!”

Do these words sound familiar? We’ve all been hit by an ad suggesting we try these detox juices at one time or other. They promise rapid weight loss, body cleansing and renewed energy. They are presented as miracle solutions, but what are they really? What are detox juices? Do they work, and are there any risks?

What are detox juices and why are they so popular?

Detox juices are generally a blend of fruits and vegetables designed to replace meals for a few days or to supplement your diet.   They are often praised for their “cleansing” properties, suggesting that they help eliminate harmful toxins. The appeal of a quick fix is powerful, and detox juices often seem like an easy way to “reset oneself”. Many people are attracted by the idea of making a fresh start or undoing past indulgences. It can be difficult to resist the bright merchandising colors and promises of improved skin, digestion, sleep and weight loss, despite the expensive price tag.

A miracle weight-loss solution?

Although some people experience rapid weight loss as part of a detox juice program, this is generally due to water loss or muscle depletion, not fat loss. This weight tends to return as soon as you resume a normal diet, reinforcing the perception that your regular diet is inadequate. What’s more, these diets often lack protein, fiber and healthy fats, which are essential to a balanced diet and healthy weight management.

When a cure becomes a risk

Sticking to detox juices for days on end can deprive your body of nutrients such as protein and fiber, leading to fatigue, headaches and even light-headedness. Over time, extreme dieting can affect your metabolism and muscle mass. Did you know that your body already has a built-in detoxification system? In fact, your liver, kidneys, lungs and skin are constantly working to eliminate waste and toxins, without the need for sophisticated juices.

A better way

Instead of consuming detox juices, concentrate on eating a variety of whole foods that naturally support your body’s detoxification systems. Drink plenty of water, enjoy fiber-rich vegetables and fruits, and regularly incorporate lean protein. For further questions or information, consult the nutritionists in the Nautilus Plus network. They’ll show you a pleasant and simple way to eat that includes much more than just juices! 😉
