The health status of the past few months has drastically upset the daily lives of millions of Quebecers. Different surveys show that lifestyles have changed since the onset of the pandemic. While some have benefited from it by trying new recipes and buying local, others have increased their consumption of alcohol and processed foods.
Regardless of your current eating habits, here are some pointers to help create eating habits that are good for you.
Take stock
We sometimes forget that eating does not only satisfy a physiological need, but a psychological and social need as well. Before changing your eating habits, take some time to identify which ones are good for you on a physical, psychological and social level, and which ones do not contribute to your general well-being. This will enable you to target an objective that is in line with both your needs and your values. Instead of the perennial: “I should change such-and-such”, you should say “I want to change such-and-such”. Result: more motivation to make the change and a better chance at success!
Change, one step at the time
When we try to change everything at once, we exhaust ourselves and we get discouraged; it’s not effective and our health takes a hit! Before jumping into action, establish your priorities and take it slow. Take some time to identify initiatives to be taken in order to achieve the desired change. For example: take a 30 minute lunch break without being seated in front of my computer at least 3 times a week, or plan a lunch with a colleague outside of the office. Whatever you decide, it must be realistic, simple and adapted to your lifestyle!
Attitude is everything
In order for your eating habits to contribute to your general well-being, it is essential to address the changes you wish to make with kindness and understanding. Do not focus on where you are now, you should focus on where you are headed. Do not strive for perfection, strive for progress: it makes for an easier and more pleasant journey.
