Fitness trends for 2019

December 20, 2018 - By Karine Larose, M.Sc.

Temps de lecture 3 minutes

Each year, the ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) publishes the annual results of its worldwide fitness trends survey which is concudted among 2,000 health and fitness professionals. Although some past trends have dropped out of the top 20, some new ones have emerged. Here then are the trends to look for in 2019, along with brief descriptions for the top 6.

1. Wearable technology

Wearable technology first appeared as a fitness trend in 2016. It was the #1 trend in 2016 and 2017 before dropping to #3 for 2018. It’s back on top for 2019. Wearable technology includes fitness trackers, smart watches, heart rate monitors, and GPS tracking devices. Examples include fitness and activity trackers like those made by Misfit®, Garmin®, and Apple®.  These devices can track heart rate, calories, sitting time, and much more. They act as an incentive to keep moving and record the progression of your workouts.

My favorite watch to track my results is the Fitbit.

2. Group Training

group class

It was in 2017 that group exercise training made the top 20, appearing at #6, and then at #2 for the last 2 years. Group exercise instructors have leadership techniques that help individuals achieve fitness goals. The content and accessorires in these types of classes are varied : HIIT, Power Fit, Dance Fit, Tabata Fit, cycling, yoga, pilates, etc…). If this type of class interests you, all you have to do is :

1. Make sure your gym offers group training classes

2. Pencil the class(es) in your schedule

3. Show up!

3. High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

hiit tabata

These exercise programs typically involve short bursts of high-intensity bouts of exercise followed by a short period of rest. Despite the warnings by some fitness professionals of potentially increased injury rates using HIIT, this form of exercise has been popular in gyms all over the world. Speak to your personal trainer in order to find out if this type of workout can be integrated into your actual fitness program.

4. Fitness Programs for Older Adults

This is a trend that emphasizes and caters to the fitness needs of the Baby Boom and older generations. People are living longer, working longer, and remaining healthy and active much longer. Professional supervised services offered in gyms can definitely benefit a variety of clients, namely the more mature ones.

5. Body Weight Training

Bodyweight training appeared for the first time in the trends survey in 2013. This program is all about using bodyweight as an inexpensive, functional way to exercise effectively. A wide range of exercises is possible with bodweight training and many positive benefits have been observed : cardiovascular, muscular, flexibility, balance, etc.

6. Employing Certified Fitness Professionals

I believe that this new trend deserves a special mention : It makes its first appearance on the charts this year and is already in the 6th spot. This only goes to reinforce the fact that hiring certified health/fitness professionals that are fully accredited is more important than ever.

Did you know that Nautilus Plus hires only professionals with a university degree (or in progress)? Take a look at our team.
