I suffer from type 1 diabetes, the most severe form of the disease, which forces me to maintain a strict lifestyle and requires several shots of insulin per day.
I was always able to properly manage my diabetes, that is, until I had my first severe episode of hypoglycaemia at age 25. My blood sugar level dropped significantly and I almost died. Following this episode, I was anxious, stressed, and scared of going through another one, so I used less insulin on a daily basis. As a result, I lost my extra pounds. I cut out alcohol entirely and began eating healthier and drinking water. I liked what I saw in the mirror, but I still struggled with my blood sugar and my doctor had no comforting words or solutions for me.
One day, after a disheartening follow-up appointment, I bought brand new running shoes and signed up for a gym membership to follow a program designed especially for me. Thanks to my skilled trainer, I gradually increased my speed up to a point where I was able to run my first 5 km for children with diabetes in April. Life is not always easy, but when I run, I don’t feel angry anymore at things that are out of my control. My body turns into a reliable machine and for a moment, I convince myself that if the Hunger Games were real, I could defeat Jennifer Lawrence!
