You exercise, but you are not losing weight?

June 4, 2013 - By Karine Larose, M.Sc.

Temps de lecture 3 minutes

This has been said quite often on this blog, and we could also say I heard it quite often from people in my own circle! And you thought you were doing everything that needs to be done. You put so much effort in your training sessions that you feel you couldn’t do any more than that. Two real questions remain: 1- do you really do what you say?; and 2- are you doing the right things to lose weight? To begin with, you should know that exercise is only part of the equation. Nutrition is just as important!

1— Do you really do what you say?

To answer the first question, I strongly suggest you take the time to write down everything you do for exercise as well as everything you eat. The perception we have of what we accomplish everyday can differ from reality! Note everything in a log, including the length of your exercise sessions, the type of exercise performed, the intensity, as well as everything you eat and drink, including quantities and the moment at which you eat your meals and snacks. This way, you will be better able to understand why your current behavior is inconsistent with your results, and bring the necessary adjustments.

2— Are you doing the right things to lose weight?

Secondly, many people believe they will get results by eating a lot less and exercising a lot more. If only it were that easy! Weight loss is a tricky calculation that needs to be done correctly. If we do not eat enough, weight loss will not happen. If we perform high-intensity exercise, without providing our body with adequate rest or nutrition for proper recovery, we will not reach the expected results. By the way, these few examples demonstrate why having a personal trainer and a nutritionist working together for you will optimize your chances of reaching our objectives.

Also, each body react differently to weight loss, depending on age, sex, the number of diets attempted in the past, hormones, etc. Moreover, as the body loses weight, we need to modify our habits. In short, several small adjustments can be necessary to reset the weight loss process. One thing is for sure, your efforts are never in vain, because even if the number on the scale is not what you would like it to be, your health thanks you!

Keep going!
